Selmer (USA) Elkhart Bari Sax Mouthpiece
In my head, I call this a Selmer – Johnston mouthpiece, but since the word, “Johnston” does not appear on the mouthpiece, that would be inappropriate. Here is some info on Merle Johnston, but not much about the mouthpieces that bear his name.
It is a very vintage, large chamber, hard rubber mouthpiece.
It is marked “3”. I measure the tip opening to be 0.078″ and the facing length to be 26mm.
It produces a dark, centered sound, but it has a rollover baffle right behind the tip, which gives it a bit more edge and projection. Since the tip opening is small, a stiffer reed can be used.
The large chamber can be an asset in resolving some intonation problems with short-necked Buescher Baris, for example.
The cap and ligature are rife with patina.
